SSDB: SAVE THE REEF, GOODBYE TO GRIEF!

Stage 1:

The children started their first SSDB lesson by creating a mindmap learning about the few main points of ‘Marine Life’ that they will be learning about! Thereafter, they engaged in a colouring activity to sum it up!

Stage 2:

In stage 2, the children ‘dived’ into the deep blue sea and discovered more on what coral reefs are! To put their observation to use, they created their very own coral reefs using sponge pieces and pipe cleaners.

Stage 3:

In stage 3, the children explored on what sea plants are and how they manage to grow despite being under the sea! The children tapped on their prior knowledge and shared on some sea plants they know of such as, seaweed and algae. Subsequently, they practiced their fine motor skills by cutting and creating their own seagrass!

Stage 4:

In stage 4, the children ‘dived’ even deeper and explored the 5 different layers of sea. Namely, sunlight zone, twilight zone, midnight zone, abyss and trenches. The children learnt the names by tracing over the worksheet before sorting the different sea creatures respectively.

Stage 5:

In stage 5, the children learnt about the life cycle of a seahorse which was chosen by them prior when completing our KWL chart. The children were amused by how the male seahorse carries the young instead of a female. Moreover, the children discovered many fun facts about the seahorse such as the largest and smallest seahorses, who are its’ predators and so forth.

In line with our SSDB project, our Chinese teacher has kindly planned lessons to educate the children on ‘Marine Life’ in the Mandarian Language as well. The children explored through a variety of craft, lessons, songs, stories and so on.
