- Project Objectives
-
Children will be able to understand the importance if water as a precious resource.
-
Encourage responsible water use and conservation.
-
Cultivate empathy and social responsibility through a fundraising initiative.
-
Strengthen partnerships between the school, parents and community.
2. Planning Stage
The project “Water, the Heart of Life” was inspired by the vital role of water in sustaining life. Teachers noticed that children often use water carelessly during handwashing, which opened discussions on the importance of conserving it.
To deepen their understanding, the school collaborated with PUB, Singapore’s National Water Agency, for educational resources such as story books to teach the children about Singapore’s water conservation and sustainability efforts.
Teachers and children brainstormed ways to think of activities to raise awareness and show appreciation for water through KWL. Together, we decided to:
-
learn about water conservation, where water comes from, and how are water being used in our daily lives
-
create water-themed / water-based crafts
-
raise funds by selling their creations to parents during the Children’s Day celebration to support the Mosque’s 45th year anniversary.
Parents were invited to contribute recycleable materials and support the fundraising efforts, and children and teachers from other levels were strongly encouraged to join in the making of merchandises to support our SSDB project.
- Project Activities
Week 1 -2:
-
Storytime sessions on the water cycle and water’s importance to life.
-
Read books published by PUB (Adventures of Water Wally and Sally).
-
Watch videos on polluted water in oceans and seas.
-
Hands-on: The making of our water cycle
-
What can we do with water? We can make watermelon juice, lava lamp and learn about heavy and light using water to observe which objects sink and float.
Week 3-4:
- Show and tell sessions using recycled materials to create posters or 3D figures to discuss with peers about what they can do with water. Parents were encouraged to do research with their children through books, or online search engines such as google.
Weeks 5-7:
-
Educational Field Trip to River Wonders: The children visited River Wonders to explore freshwater ecosystems and observe how water supports animal and plant life.
-
They learned about habitats, the water cycle in nature, and how clean water keeps both humans and wildlife healthy.
Weeks 8-10:
-
Preparation for the Children’s Day Fundraising Event and SSDB Showcase
-
The handmade crafts were sold to raise funds as part of the Mosque’s 45th Anniversary. Crafts were also made intentionally to raise awareness about saving water.
- Children’s Learning and Reflections
Children learned to value water as a precious and limited resource. They demonstrated awareness in daily routines, such as turning off taps and using water mindfully. Children also are aware of the scarcity of water in third world countries.
Children’s quotes:
“People in Palestine have no water” - Daniel
“I don’t want to waste water because animals also need water.” - Muhsinah
“We need water to be clean and healthy and to pray” - Naqiyyah
- Teacher’s Reflections
Teachers observed that the children became more thoughtful and responsible about water use. The River Wonders trip made abstract concepts about water come alive and children are more empathetic towards animals and wildlife. Children also showed pride and teamwork when preparing crafts and participating in fundraising.
The project successfully integrated environmental awareness, community service (giving back to the mosque through fundraising), character development and appreciation.
- Project Outcome and Showcase
The project concluded with a Children’s Day celebration and SSDB Showcase Fundraising Event, where children showcased and bought their handmade crafts.
The funds raised were donated to support the Mosque’s 45th Anniversary celebration, strengthening the connection between school, home and the community.
The children were also given SSDB certificates at the end of the project as a token of participation and heart-work!
