As part of our Start Small Dream Big (SSDB) project on Sustainability, our preschool children embarked on a meaningful journey to learn how small actions can make a big difference for our planet. This year, our project focused on understanding the importance of the 3Rs — Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle.
To make learning hands-on and fun, our K2 children took the lead in creating their own recycling bins using recycled cardboard boxes. They colour-coded the bins into three categories:
Blue – for metals
Red – for plastics
Yellow – for papers
Through this creative process, children discussed how everyday items can be reused and how sorting recyclables helps reduce waste. They also reflected on ways to take care of the environment in their daily lives.
We have embedded this recycling routine into the children’s daily lives by encouraging families to bring in clean recyclable items to support the project. This strong home–school partnership helps children understand that caring for the environment is a shared responsibility.
To complete the recycling process, we collaborated with Sembcorp, who helped collect all the recyclable materials contributed by our children and families. This real-world connection reinforced the children’s understanding of how recycling systems work in Singapore and how their efforts contribute to a cleaner, greener future.
Through this SSSB project, our children learned that even small hands can make a big impact. They developed a sense of pride, responsibility, and environmental awareness — valuable lessons that will stay with them as they continue to grow and care for the world around them.
