Tiny Heroes, Sharing Smiles

As part of our SSDB project, children from Playgroup (PG) to Kindergarten 2 (K2) came together in a meaningful initiative centred on caring for the community.

Through a series of thoughtfully designed activities, our young “heroes” were guided to develop values such as kindness, empathy, and responsibility.

Collaboratively, they carried out small yet impactful actions that brought joy and smiles to those around them, reinforcing the importance of compassion and community spirit from a young age.

K2 Unity

Working with Toa Payoh East CC in Chingay Mural Painting

The Kindergarten 2 (K2) children had the opportunity to contribute to the Chingay Mural Painting at Toa Payoh Community Centre.

Working alongside Mrs Tan, the mural’s creator, the children assisted in painting the background and were guided to include iconic landmarks of Toa Payoh, such as the dragon playground and nostalgic childhood snacks.

This enriching experience allowed the children to witness how their creativity and teamwork could play a part in brightening the community and preserving local heritage.

Appreciating Our Community Partner:

In celebration of Hari Raya Puasa, the children took the initiative to show appreciation to the staff at Toa Payoh Community Centre by preparing homemade brownies. Participating actively in the baking process, the children measured and scooped ingredients such as flour, sugar, oil, malt powder, and baking soda. They then mixed the ingredients and used the microwave to transform the mixture into delicious brownies.

Once baked, the children carefully cut the brownies into smaller portions and packed them into individual gift packages. They later visited the community centre to personally present the treats to the staff, greeting them with warm smiles and cheerful wishes of “Selamat Hari Raya Puasa.” This thoughtful gesture not only allowed the children to express gratitude but also helped spread festive joy and strengthen community bonds.

Hari Raya Ketupat Decorations for Toa Payoh East CC

The K1 children also took part in celebrating Hari Raya Puasa with the community. They created colourful ketupat decorations and shared them with the staff at Toa Payoh Community Centre. This simple yet meaningful gesture allowed the children to spread festive cheer and show their appreciation.

National Day Celebration with United Medicare Centre - Toa Payoh East

In conjunction with National Day, the children participated in a baking activity where they worked together to make banana muffins. The children engaged actively in the process, from mixing the ingredients to observing the muffins rise in the oven. The activity provided them with hands-on learning opportunities, encouraged cooperation and teamwork, and allowed them to experience the joy of preparing food with care.

After the baking activity, the children extended their celebration by sharing the muffins with the elderly at United Medicare Centre. This small act of kindness served as a meaningful step in helping the children understand the importance of giving and caring for others in the community. The warm smiles and gratitude from the elderly brought a sense of pride and happiness to the children, allowing them to experience how their efforts could brighten someone else’s day.

Through this meaningful celebration, the children not only developed important life skills but also deepened their understanding of the value of caring for others. By working together and preparing food with love, they experienced the joy of sharing and unity. This activity reflects the spirit of our SSDB project, where even small acts of kindness and cooperation can bring people together and strengthen the sense of community.

HDB OhYay! Programme – Hari Raya Greeting Cards for the Community

N2 students participated in the OhYay Programme where they explored the importance of being kind and responsible members of their community. Through engaging activities and discussions, they learned what it means to be a good neighbour. The children identified simple yet meaningful ways to be nice, such as greeting others with a friendly “hello” and keeping shared spaces clean by not littering in the corridor. These experiences helped nurture empathy, respect, and a sense of responsibility in their daily interactions.

As part of the Hari Raya celebrations, N2 children participated in a meaningful and creative activity by making festive greeting cards for Muslim staff members at Toa Payoh East Community Club. Using sponges, they dabbed bright paint onto coloured paper, adding a splash of festive cheer. To enhance their designs, they sprinkled glitter over the paint, creating vibrant and eye-catching artwork.

With guidance from their teachers, the children used white crayons to write thoughtful messages such as “Eid Mubarak” and “Selamat Hari Raya” on their cards. This hands-on activity not only encouraged creativity and self-expression but also provided a valuable opportunity for children to learn about cultural appreciation, religious celebrations and the importance of respecting diversity in a multiracial society.

Through this simple yet meaningful gesture, the children experienced the joy of giving and deepened their understanding of inclusivity and respect for others’ traditions.

N1 Care

As part of this year’s Start Small Dream Big (SSDB) project, parents were invited to donate individually wrapped food items such as biscuits and 3-in-1 drinks.

In conjunction with PCF Charity Week, the children learnt about the value of kindness and expressed their appreciation by colouring “Thank You” cards for community helpers.

Some children distributed care packs to hawkers at the local hawker centre, as well as to elderly diners and domestic helpers they met.

They also went on a neighbourhood walk, personally delivering their thank you cards to stall vendors and other community helpers, such as an electrician.

Through this meaningful, hands-on experience, the children developed gratitude and a deeper appreciation for the hard work and contributions of people in their community.

Community Visit – Learning from Police Officers

Children and teachers enjoyed a storytelling and sharing session conducted by the Police Officers. The children had the opportunity to learn about the roles and responsibilities of the police in keeping the community safe. They were also given the chance to view the Police Patrol Car and take photographs with the officers. This experience provided the children with a meaningful understanding of community helpers and encouraged respect for those who contribute to the safety and well-being of society.

Conclusion:

This SSDB project provided the children with a meaningful opportunity to demonstrate care and appreciation for members of the community. Through activities such as creating and delivering thank-you cards, distributing care packs, and engaging directly with community helpers, the children developed a deeper understanding of empathy, gratitude, and social responsibility. This experience fostered their awareness of the importance of contributing positively to the well-being of others and reinforced the value of being compassionate and considerate members of society.
