SSDB Launch Party @ Sparkletots Preschool Whampoa Block 85

On the 1st of February, The Straits Times published an article on One man’s crusade to give discarded items new life. Mr Arthur Huang turned cigarette buds into building materials, old discs into sunglass frames and plastic bottles into clothing!

What an inspiration!

Tapping on the children’s innate curiosity and creativity, our Centre’s theme for this year’s Start Small Dream Big theme is none other than “From Trash to Treasure.”

Weeks ahead of the launch party, we worked closely with parents and the children - encouraging them to collect whatever recyclable materials they are able to get their hands on!

Bright and early on the day of the launch, we were pleasantly surprised to see children and their parents with bags of plastic bottles, old CDs, cardboard boxes and the list goes on!

Let the games begin!

All hands on deck as children, parents and teachers navigate their way through an obstacle course to reach the sorting bins!

This was a fantastic opportunity to teach the children to differentiate between recylable materials such as plastic, paper, metal, fabric and more!

After all the fun and games, the children and their parents recited a pledge:

Starting today, I pledge to do my part to save the Earth by recycling what I can.

Glass, paper, plastic and tin,

Goes into the recycling bin.

Starting today, I pledge to do my part to save the Earth by up-cycling what I can.

Bottles, cartons, boxes and rags

I will make treasure out of trash.

And with that, they sealed their pledge by fingerprinting on a papermache globe! 🌍

Parents and caregivers “signed” the pledge contract by printing on the globe!

After some fun under the sun, we headed back indoors for a sharing on how we can begin to turn Trash to Treasure!

Old clothes into new pouches for mobile devices!

Plastic bottles into pencil cases!

Cartons into doll houses!

Bottle caps into accessories!

We can’t wait to explore these possibilities in the weeks to come!
