SSDB 2025: SG60 — Celebrating Differences, Embracing All

Sunflower Preschool @ Pasir Ris embarked on our SSDB project, SG60: Celebrating Differences, Embracing All, which aimed to nurture empathy, kindness, and inclusivity in our young learners as we celebrate Singapore’s 60th birthday. Through meaningful weekly experiences, the children learned to appreciate diversity, build friendships, and understand that every act of kindness helps our nation grow stronger together.

Week 1: We Are All Unique, We Are All Friends

To begin our journey, the children explored what makes each of us unique. Through engaging stories such as “We’re Different, We’re the Same” and “It’s Okay to Be Different”, they learned to appreciate their individual features and those of their friends. Mirror reflections, self-portraits, and friendship comparisons helped the children recognise that our differences make us special — and that friendship goes beyond appearances.

Week 2: Understanding and Embracing All Abilities

In the second week, the focus shifted toward inclusion and empathy. The children learned about Down Syndrome through age-appropriate videos, visuals, and storytelling. They discussed how everyone learns and plays differently yet shares the same need for love and friendship. The highlight was a sharing session with the Down Syndrome Association, where children interacted and created posters titled “We Can All Learn & Play Together.” These moments deepened their understanding of kindness, respect, and inclusivity.

Week 3: SG60 — Kindness Grows Our Nation

As Singapore marked her 60th year, the children reflected on what it means to be part of this caring nation. They explored landmarks, sang patriotic songs, and created heart collages in red and white to show their love for Singapore. Each child contributed to a “Garden of Kindness” mural, drawing or writing about one kind act they could do to make Singapore a better place. This week reminded them that every small act of kindness helps build a brighter, more united community.

Week 4: Art Fair — Colours of Kindness & Growth

Our SSDB journey culminated in a meaningful Art Fair: Colours of Kindness & Growth, where creativity, inclusivity, and compassion came together. Days before the Art Fair, the children eagerly prepared for the big day. They spent time creating beautiful crafts, designing colorful signage, decorating donation boxes, and arranging their displays with care. Every detail was thoughtfully planned, and the excitement was palpable as the children worked together to bring the fair to life. These moments of collaboration and creativity set the stage for a meaningful celebration of kindness and community.

On 08 August, the eve of Singapore’s 60th birthday, the children of Sunflower Preschool @ Pasir Ris proudly showcased their handcrafted artworks. Funds raised from the fair were donated to the Down Syndrome Association, allowing the children to see how their efforts could bring joy to others. Through this month-long journey, our children learned to celebrate differences, embrace all, and contribute meaningfully to the community. Together, they discovered that kindness, empathy, and understanding truly make Singapore shine.
