Showing Care Towards the Elderly

Event 2 (Part 2)

Showing Care Towards the Elderly

On 7th July 2017, the K2 teachers organised a visit to the Shree Narayana Mission Home. We discussed with the children about the planned visit and explained to them about the kind of elderly residents we could expect to see. They were very excited and suggested that they could prepare some performances to entertain the elderly. Hence, their performance preparations started with the help of teachers.

Letters to parents were sent seeking their permission to allow their children to take part in this excursion. We were elated to receive an overwhelming, positive response from the parents, including an interest to contribute items for donation to the Home. The parents from K2 and K1 levels generously donated items such as biscuits tins, whole meal crackers, roll packets, facial tissues, wet tissues and towels, according to the Home’s requirements. The total cost of the donation items is approximately $ 600.

Upon reaching the Home, we were given a warm welcome by the staff and they took us to the multipurpose hall, where all the elderly were already gathered for their daily exercise routine. The children were very excited to perform their fancy dress performance and to sing songs on stage in front of the elderly people. The children sang a few songs in Mandarin, and after their performance the children presented the bottle plants to the elderly as a token of appreciation. All the elderly present were very delighted and their faces lit up with happiness. Some of them sang and clapped for the children and they even asked the children what their names were. They even told them that they sang and danced very well, and that the girls were looking very pretty in their sarees.

Through this project, children learnt to show their love and care in a tangible manner toward the seniors in our community, and to realise the importance of being kind. We were glad to have the opportunity to indicate positive values, such as kindness and care, by visiting the Narayana Mission Home.
