Planting Kindness, Growing Change: An Earth Day Celebration with a Heart

In celebration of Earth Day, our children in PCF Sparkletots 581 took part in a meaningful journey of growth and giving through the Start Small, Dream Big (SSDB) initiative. This year’s theme, “Planting Kindness, Growing Change,” reflected not only our commitment to the environment but also to nurturing empathy, responsibility, and community spirit in our young learners.

The day began with excitement as children arrived at school dressed in creative outfits made from recycled materials.

From colorful nature crowns to dresses made from paper bags and skirts from plastic, each outfit reflected the children’s imagination and a growing understanding of sustainability. These eco-costumes were lovingly crafted with the help of families, highlighting the strong home-school partnership that supports each child’s learning journey.

Throughout the day, children participated in various Earth Day-themed craft activities:

Little artists in the Early Years group. Our friends from Playgroup and Nursery 1 turned flowers and twigs into paintbrushes! With every stroke, they explored creativity and discovered how natural materials can become beautiful tools.

These hands-on experiences not only sparked their creativity, but also encouraged them to think critically about how everyday waste can be transformed into something useful and beautiful. Through these experiences, children developed important problem-solving and fine motor skills while expressing their thoughts about caring for the environment.

The Preschool group took the lead in sustainability by crafting pots from recycled bottles. These pots will soon hold the seeds of change, planted with care and watched with love all year long.

The highlight of our Earth Day celebration was the planting activity. Each child was given some small seeds to plant—a symbol of kindness and hope. As they gently placed the seeds into the soil, they learned about what plants need to grow and how caring for something small can lead to big, beautiful changes. These seeds were not just planted in pots, but also in the hearts of our children.

The planted seeds will be transferred to the school’s mini-garden, named “Start with a Small Seed, Dream Big and Grow Beyond.” There, the children will continue to care for their plants throughout the school year by watering them and observing their growth—nurturing patience, responsibility, and a love for nature along the way.

Through these engaging and purposeful activities, children gained a deeper understanding of the importance of environmental care. They learned to identify recyclable materials and use them creatively, understood the basic needs of plants, and recognized how their actions—no matter how small—can contribute to a larger, positive change. These experiences support key learning goals such as developing environmental awareness, fostering creativity, and encouraging hands-on exploration. They also align with our learning objectives, which include building foundational knowledge of sustainability, expressing ideas through art, and demonstrating responsibility through ongoing care of living things.

This Earth Day was not just a day of celebration, but a powerful start to a year-long journey of growth. By planting kindness, our children are already growing change—one small seed at a time.
