K1 Fundraising for St Luke’s Eldercare

For this year’s SSDB project, the K1 Teachers and children focused on caring for the seniors at St Luke’s Eldercare @ Bukit Timah Centre. Through virtual engagements and neighbourhood walks, children were able to identify that many seniors were seated as they had weak legs/bodies.

Through discussions, the K1s wanted to “solve” the seniors problem. Through a voting session, they decided to make money to buy wheelchairs and walking aids for them. Using the 5W1H, the Teachers facilitied the children’s thinking through the project.

The K1s decide that they want to set up a stall selling preloves items priced at $1, $2, $3, $10 and $15 to the children and families of MFS Holland. Through this activity, children were able to grasp the concept of money and sorting as they planned the price of their own items.

The K1s also noticed that the children and families of MFS Holland would not know about their shop and would lead to them not raising enough funds. They then decide to create a huge poster to be placed at the main entrance of the centre and flyers to be given out to their own parents. This activity encourages children to expand their reading, writing and speaking skills as they wrote down the details of the K1 shop - title, date and venue. They also used the flyers as a talking point to share with their parents on why the shop is being set up.

The K1 shop was set up for a week where children man it on their own, with little facilitation from their Teachers. They were observed to be listening to the needs of their customers and communicating to them about the purpose of the set up and prices of the items.

After which, we raised a total of $510 and were able to purchase 1 walking frame, 2 wheelchairs and 3 games for the seniors at St Luke’s Eldercare! Kudos to the K1 champs for being such wonderful shopkeepers for the first time!
