Caring with a Sparkle (Part I)

With a focus on animal welfare, our school’s Start Small Dream Big project this year is titled “Caring with a Sparkle.” The goal is for our young learners, ages 0-6, to develop a deep appreciation for the animals around them. Through hands-on activities and experiences, we will teach them the skills needed to properly care for animals. Ultimately, we hope to empower our children to become compassionate advocates for the animals around them.

Rainforest Wild Asia

Our early years children ages 0 – 3 had a memorable trip to Rainforest Wild Asia where they explored the new zoo with their parents & teachers. Through this experience, our young ones had the opportunity to appreciate the different wild lifes and build appreciation for the different animals.

To make the field trip more engaging, we gave the children and their parents task cards with a list of animals to find. This scavenger-hunt style activity was designed to build anticipation and get the children excited about actively searching for the animals.

Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve

Our Nursery 2 children had the opportunity to explore a new habitat: the mangrove ecosystem. During this experience, they learned about the unique flora and fauna and discovered the importance of conservation, including how they can contribute to protecting these animals’ homes.

Before the visit, the children participated in a hands-on, sensory activity that allowed them to explore how a mangrove system is different from a typical park or marine environment. This activity helped them build foundational knowledge for the upcoming trip.

During the trip to the mangrove, children spotted a variety of animals, including unique migratory birds they hadn’t seen before. The children also noticed a significant amount of trash, which led to an important discussion about its impact on the ecosystem. They keenly observed that there were no animals near the trash and concluded that leaving litter behind was harmful and wrong.
