‘Salute to the Bus Captain’

The wheels of the bus go round and round.’ This famous song can be sang by children of all ages and they love to be the ‘driver’ of the bus. However, they may not know the vast responsibilities of a bus captain. Besides manoeuvring a big vehicle in the rain and heat, they have to ensure the safety of the passengers, safety on the road as well as exposing to the risks of Covid-19.

This year, the teachers and children of YWCA Bedok South CDC would like to express our heartfelt gratitude for the bus captains as our Start Small Dream Big (SSDB) initiative. The children would like to bake cookies and make a card for the bus captains as a token of appreciation.

Dramatization is an effective way to role-model appropriate behaviours in children. Through dramatization, we could also draw out children’s prior knowledge about safety on the bus and what they knew about being a bus captain. Through a video “A day as a bus captain”, teachers facilitated on the duties and responsibilities of being a bus captain. Teachers then discussed with the children on how they could show respect to the bus captains. Greeting the bus captain, sitting down properly or holding tight were some suggestions given by the children.
