YWCA @ Bishan CDC Start Small Dream Big  Project~Zero Waste

Our K2 children embarked on our Start Small Dream Big journey. Our project topic on “Zero Waste” was chosen based on considering children’s prerequisite knowledge and opinions about recycling; The children have been noted to be familiar and well-acquainted on the topic. Teacher would like children to be able to practice recycling as much as possible and integrate it into their daily lives in school and at home. Children started off SSDB project with brain building nature activities like nature walk. Materials used are recycled cardboards, things collected from nature and paints. Learning Domains : DOW, ACE(A), SED.

On 6th of July 2020, our first group of K2 children went for a nature walk. They gazed the clouds, listened to birds sing, collected small seeds and leaves…learning to care and respect for environment! On 7th of July 2020, our second group of K2 children continued with nature walk. They watched worms wriggled through soil, butterflies landed on flowers and smell fresh-cut grass. They picked some twigs, leaves and flower buds…instilling a sense of wonder and curiosity…

Upon returning to classroom, with teacher’s facilitation, children started to cut their recycled cardboards to their desirable shapes. They painted on it to create the background of the nature

Next, children created their nature crafts by cutting, pasting leaves, seeds, twigs and flowers onto the painted cardboards.

Children constructed simple sentences about their craft work incorporating elements of art and using art vocabulary appropriately.

Children were pleased to show and share their craft works with their peers!
