Experiential Learning Missions: Say no, Say no, SAY NO TO PLASTIC!

Over four exciting weeks, our little Eco Ninjas from MK@Bendemeer have embarked on a meaningful journey to learn how plastic waste affects our planet—and how they can take action to protect it.

Children were introduced to the concept of recycling. They learnt to identify plastic items commonly found in everyday life and distinguish between what can and cannot be recycled. Using real plastic items and sorting boxes, they worked together to sort the plastics into the correct bins. To mark the end of their eco-mission, each child proudly received a sticker on their Eco-Ninja band.

In their next mission, children found out what happens to rubbish that they throw away. Children followed the journey of a plastic bottle from rubbish bin to incineration plant and finally to Semakau Landfill through an obstacle course. As the children reflected, they discussed the effects of overflowing landfills and the importance of reducing waste. Each session ended with a symbolic act of removing a plastic item from the surface of our “Earth” and chanting together “Say no, say no, SAY NO TO PLASTIC!”

The mother tongue teachers led the children in learning the impact of plastic pollution to marine life. Children were surprised to discover “sea creatures” trapped in plastic waste. The teachers enacted the voices of sea creatures crying “Help us!”. Our Eco-Ninjas set out to rescue the sea creature through our water play setup filled with plastic. As they cleaned, children discussed how marine life is affected by pollution and shared ways to prevent it. They concluded the session with a strong message: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle!

Reflecting on their learning journey, children explored how plastic is used in everyday life. Short video clips of teachers using single-use plastics sparked thoughtful discussions about better alternatives. Teachers then introduced eco-friendly items such as reusable straws, containers, water bottles, and cloth bags. K1 children expressed their thoughts through recorded audio reflections, while K2 children created vibrant posters with messages like “Use less plastic!” and “Bring your own bag!”—hoping to inspire the wider community to make sustainable choices.

In our last experiential experience, Our Eco Ninjas took on their final mission—to reuse plastic waste creatively by making games, furniture, or musical instruments.
