As part of the “Start Small Dream Big” initiative, the K2 children of My First Skool @ Pasir Ris Drive 1 embarked on a project titled ‘Uncle Mamoon’s secrets to keeping the neighbourhood clean’.
Prior to the project, the children were encouraged to engage in higher order thinking by reflecting on their existing understanding on the job scope of a cleaner and after which, come up with questions to extend on their learning.
Questions adopted the 5Ws1H technique and came up with questions regarding neighbourhood cleaners and their job scope.
On the day of the project, as per every other day, Uncle Mamoon greeted the children warmly a bright smile and took them on a short neighbourhood walk. During the walk, he gave children a quick glimpse into his role as a community helper – a cleaner, and how he keeps the neighbourhood clean (E.g cleaning of drains, sweeping litter, emptying the spiral waste bin). Uncle Mamoon also shared with children the perks, joys, challenges and sacrifices his job entails and kindly answered the questions children have prepared for him

Lastly, the children experienced the hard work needed to maintain the cleanliness of the neighbourhood by picking up litter.
At the end of the walk, the children shared their thoughts and sentiments on their experience with Uncle Mamoon. They also prepared a small token of appreciation for Uncle Mamoon and his team to thank them for their efforts and dedication in keeping the neighbourhood clean.

Through children’s reflection and sharing, it was heart-warming to learn that they have developed a new found respect and appreciation towards cleaners.
