The trip to Ling Kwang Home

“Children, we will be going to Ling Kwang Home to visit the popos and yeyes in May!”

Upon hearing this, the children were filled with excitement. They began to ask questions like what we would be doing there, and etcetera.

Reminding ourselves God’s word, we were encouraged to spread more love and joy beyond our classrooms!

This year, our K2s ( Truth and Love Class) had the opportunity to spend 2 days with the elderly at the Ling Kwang Home, home for the aged.

Blessed by the strategic location that is situated behind our school compound, children have learnt the existence about the Home beforehand.

Nonetheless, my partner, Teacher Anusha, and I, further shared with the children more about what a Home was. We discussed with the children about what were some ways that we could do to bring joy and love to them, which ultimately is to spread God’s love to the popos and yeyes!

The first day of “Start Small Dream Big” saw the children geared up readily in their orange hats, ready to set off for the Home!

To start off the day on a lively note, the children were danced to “ 1,2,3 Jesus is alive”, “ Jesus loves me” and “ 幸福的脸” (A face filled with happiness). The children were dancing confidently with much enthusiasm. The elderly were seen enjoying and clapping to the songs! Smiles were written on their faces and they were definitely appreciating every performance that the children had put up for them! It was definitely a lovely moment to be remembered!

What caught my attention on the first day of the project day was the make-shift Kopitiam that was held in the Multi-purpose Hall.

It was definitely an eye opener for all of us! There, children mingled with the grandparents over Milo, Sau Tar Piah, Chee Kueh, Chee Chong Fun, and many more! It was a whole new different experience as children had their snacks together with the popos and yeyes !

Children were encouraged to share with the popos and yeyes about their favourite colours, numbers, food and vice versa.

The two days of activities were filled with playing games such as “ Guessing the Places in Singapore”, “ Passing the parcels”, as well as doing Marble Art paintings.

The doing of the “Marble art paintings was to signify the collaboration between old and young, bringing across the message that no matter what age one is, anything is possible only where there is Love, akin to the outcome of how the Marble Art Paintings turn up to be eventually!

Children and the elderly were seen having an enjoyable and quality time together. They had created unique yet different patterns with the variations of a mixture of colours.

The aftermath of the Marble Art Paintings showed that God made us all uniquely different and reminded us that we were special in God’s eyes too!

The “Start Small Dream Big” project ended off on a grateful note. Children presented the gifts to the elderly. Children thanked the elderly for the great time spent together. The gifts, with their parents’ assistance, were handmade. They were made of recycled materials which was yet another reminder to the children that we should always love our Earth.

The two days of the “ Start Small Dream Big” project reminded us once again that everyone plays a little part to bring smiles around!
