Story 4 : Neighbourhood Clean Up 👫👫👫

The children brainstormed ideas on how they can bring their learning to the community using the knowledge and experience that they have gathered through the project

One morning, the K2 children set out to clean up the neighbourhood near the kindergarten. They wore their SSDB hats, gloves (to pick up litter) and brought along bags to dispose the trash.

Before the neighbourhood clean up, the children and their teachers discussed on safety and hygiene. The teachers discussed about picking up sharp or broken objects such as shards of glass. The children were able to make comments such as ‘the glass will poke your hands’ and ‘you will get hurt and bleed’. This showed children were able to articulate safety for themselves and others.

The teachers discussed on germs and bacteria thriving in trash in the premises and the a child commented ‘cannot touch’. They also discussed on how our neighbourhood cleaners picked up trash everyday as part of their job. The children commented that the cleaners used thongs and gloves to pick up litter. One child commented, “Cleaners job is not easy”.

With these information and knowledge, the children set out one morning along with their teachers to clean up the premises in an open theatrette outside their school. They wore their SSDB hats to shield their eyes away from the sunlight and wore gloves on their hands to prevent contamination of germs and bacteria. Black trash bags were placed in the centre. The teachers briefed the children once more and the children recalled and revisited on safety and hygiene before embarking on the clean up.

Yogesha from class K2A, picked up a plastic cup and showed it to his teacher saying “Teacher, this is plastic. We have to throw it in the recycling bin”. His thoughtful remark gave his peers the interest to find for more items that can be recycled.

The children spent a fruitful morning at the premises of the parade square outside school. This not only benefitted their learning and enhanced their knowledge of common litter found outside, many passer-bys saw what the children were doing.

A resident who was walking her dog thanked the children for cleaning up the area. The children were more aware of their surroundings and reminded others to dispose their litter in the right way 😊
