As part of our Start Small, Dream Big (SSDB) project “Green Hands, Big Hearts”, the Nursery 2 (N2) children from E-Bridge Preschool (Montreal Link) had the exciting opportunity to learn more about recycling from Tom, a representative from ALBA.
During his visit, Tom shared an engaging presentation with educational slides that helped the children recall the 3Rs – Reduce, Reuse, Recycle – and understand why recycling is so important. The highlight of the session was the interactive booth that included two challenges: the Toss-the-Battery Challenge and the Sorting Challenge. The children took turns to try out these activities, which allowed them to practise sorting items into the correct bins and safely disposing of batteries. With each attempt, they grew more confident and enthusiastic, cheering one another on.
Alongside the talk, the children had also been collecting recyclable materials with their families. Soon, the “Yipp Bin” in the classroom was completely full. The children showed great initiative and responsibility as they worked together to bring the recyclables outside and take turns placing them into the ALBA recycling bin. This hands-on action gave them a real sense of contribution towards caring for the environment.
A few days later, the children were thrilled to witness the ALBA recycling truck in action. They watched in awe as the truck collected the full recycling bin, marvelling at how it could lift and carry such a large container with ease. This real-life experience deepened their understanding of how recyclables are collected and transported, and sparked further conversations about what happens to the items after they leave the school.
Through ALBA Recycling talk, the interactive challenges, and their active participation in recycling, the N2 children not only gained valuable knowledge but also developed pride in being responsible “green ambassadors.” Their growing awareness and care for the environment continues to shine through in their daily conversations and actions.
