SDBD Project @ Alora Preschool- First Aid Basics

Our Nursery, K1 and K2 children continued their SSDB journey by exploring the theme of First Aid Basics as part of our ongoing project, Health and Safety First: Caring for Ourselves and Others. The aim was to introduce young children to the importance of helping themselves and others in simple, safe ways during minor injuries.

To begin with, the children took part in an interactive session called First Aid Kit Exploration. They observed a real first aid kit and were introduced to basic items such as plasters, cotton wool, antiseptic wipes, and gauze. Children were curious and highly engaged as they discussed what each item was for and how it could be used to help someone in need. “This is for cleaning cuts before we put on the plaster,” one child shared confidently.

The children’s interest in helping others led to a follow-up role-playing activity where they practised putting on pretend plasters, wrapping toy arms with bandages, and comforting friends in imaginary first aid situations. They took turns acting as caregivers and patients, developing empathy and a sense of responsibility through meaningful play. One child gently said, “Don’t worry, I’m here to help,” while tending to a toy that had a ‘scratch’.

Back in the classroom, these experiences were extended through a fun and memorable first aid song, which helped the children remember basic steps such as cleaning, covering, and calling for help. This musical approach supported the children in recalling procedures and reinforced the idea of staying calm and kind when someone gets hurt.

Through these activities, the children built awareness of basic first aid, learned to express care and concern for others, and gained the confidence to take simple actions in times of need. These moments were captured and reflected upon in the classroom, helping the children revisit what they had learnt.

This hands-on experience further strengthened their understanding of health and safety, and marked another step forward in their SSDB journey of building a kinder and more caring community.
