To conclude our SSDB Project, we wanted to end on a meaningful note—by encouraging our children to give back to the elders in our community. As part of our final activity, the children prepared handwritten letters and assembled simple yet thoughtful goodie bags, filled with small treats and items meant to bring joy and comfort.
We spoke to the children about the importance of respecting and appreciating our elders—the wisdom they hold, the experiences they’ve lived through, and the quiet strength they carry. With this in mind, we set off on a walk around our neighbourhood, looking for elderly residents who were resting or spending time at the void decks. Each interaction was filled with warmth and sincerity, as the children presented their gifts along with smiles, kind words, and their heartfelt letters.
Some of the elders were surprised and deeply touched by the gesture, while others smiled and expressed their gratitude. These moments—though simple—were filled with genuine connection and emotion. It was a beautiful reminder that even small acts of kindness can leave a lasting impact. For many of our children, this was their first time directly engaging with the elderly in this way, and it was a powerful experience that helped them understand the value of compassion, empathy, and community.
There is something truly special about giving without expecting anything in return. Watching the children interact with the elders—some shyly, others more confidently—was a touching reminder of how capable young hearts are of spreading love and hope. It was a proud moment for all of us, as educators and caregivers, to see them take these steps towards becoming kind and socially responsible individuals.
As we wrapped up this final chapter of our SSDB journey, we were reminded that meaningful contributions don’t have to be grand—they just need to come from the heart. We hope that through this experience, our children will carry forward the values of empathy and service, and continue to show love and care to the elders in their lives, now and in the future.
May this spirit of kindness continue to grow in them, and may they always find joy in giving back to those around them.
