This year, our Start Small Dream Big project focused on Family Values. The objectives were to help children understand the importance of family as their very first community, while also strengthening the bond between home and school by actively involving parents in meaningful activities. Through this project, children explored key family values such as respect, love, commitment, and care & concern.
During the June Holiday, teachers conducted lessons using resources from Families for Life. Through interactive activities, stories and role play, children explored what it means to show these family value. For instances, giving hugs and saying kind words or helping parents with chores are examples of showing love. These lessons helped children understand how they can demonstrate these values in their everyday lives.
Our Playgroup children practised commitment through simple hands-on activities such as tidying their toys after play, returning utensils after lunch, and looking after their belongings. At home, parents reinforced this learning by encouraging children to dress themselves, clear the table after meals, keep their toys tidy, and put away their shoes.
Our Nursery 1 children explored love through stories, songs, and by creating colourful heart-shaped suncatchers using cellophane paper, a lovely reminder that love brings warmth and light to their families.
Families for Life also provided a resource where children need to work together with their family members to create their own DIY fans. Each fan came with a set of stickers, which the children and their families used to decorate their fans. This activity gave children the opportunity to work with their mummy and daddy, practising patience and teamwork while reflecting on how their families show care, love, and commitment in everyday life.
For Mother’s Day, mothers were invited to join their children in decorating vases with colourful mosaic tiles. Working side by side, both mother and child enjoyed the creative process and shared moments of joy together. The activity gave children the opportunity to express love and appreciation in a special and memorable way, while mothers treasured the experience of making something meaningful together.
For Father’s Day, the children and their fathers created their own yoghurt parfaits. They layered yoghurt, fresh fruit, and crunchy toppings in cup, making a delicious and thoughtful treat. This hands-on activity gave the children a chance to show love and care through a shared creation, and fathers appreciated the special effort made by their children.
Through these meaningful experiences, the children developed a deeper understanding of family values and learnt how to apply it their daily lives. By involving parents, it strengthened home-school partnership and created precious moments for families to cherish.
