Learning about Water Saving Methods( Visit to Singapore Science Centre & parent collaboration)

Did you know that the correct water demand in Singapore is about 430 million gallons a day? However, with Singapore’s population steadily increasing, our consumption of water could likely double by 2060. It is hence important to educate the children about water conservation and inculcate in them water saving habits.

In order to do so, the children at Bright Juniors @ Yishun were brought on an excursion to the Singapore Science Centre. There, the children learnt about the ways which they could reduce their water consumption in their daily lives. These knowledge were shared with their parents so that these are practiced at home as well.

Aside from that, the children were also introduced to the Four National Taps of Singapore, namely water from local catchment areas, imported water, NEWater and desalinated water. The children learnt that in Singapore, while we have a robust and sustainable water supply, installing the infrastructure to supply water is only onehalf of the equation. As the population and economy continues to grow, Singapore needs to ensure that the demand for water does not rise at an unsustainable rate. So how did the children put what they learnt into action?

Firstly, one of our students learnt about the use of a thimble to reduce water usage when washing the dishes.

Another student attempted washing the dishes under slow running water.

Thirdly, our student also practised hand-washing their clothes instead of using the washing machine despite not having a full load of clothes.

Lastly, one student had the opportunity to collect water in a pail for a water ration exercise at home.

In conclusion, in teaching our children about the different water supplies of water in Singapore, as well as giving the chance to practise water conservation in school and at home, we hope to inculcate in the children the belief that each and every one of them has a stake in water in order to secure an adequate and affordable supply of water for their future.
