The children were introduced about caring for the elderly through a book sharing by Teacher Maria Eden. The title of the book was “Grumpy Grandpa Ben.” The book talks about the emotions of a grandfather who is not used to having children around him. The character of the book eventually opened up his heart to the grandchildren due to the small acts of kindness they have done to assist their grandfather with his daily chores.

The children were engaged in a discussion and learned the importance of caring for the elderly. Relating to their own personal experiences spending quality time with their own grandparents.

22 July

We had a soft launch of the SSDB project with the Kindergarten One children.

The soft launch was to get the children to recall what they have talked about during the big book sharing we had back in March. The children were introduced to Fei Yue Senior Activity Centre, the beneficiary of the food donation drive project that we are planning to embark on.

The children also did a craft as a token of appreciation for the elderly. It is an alternative way of sending their regards to them since they are not able to drop by for a visit.

27 July-5 August

We set aside a week to carry out the collection of food contribution from parents. We communicated with the Senior Activity Centre representative to seek for suggestions on the food bags. We requested from parents for items such as rice, sugar, canned foods and few other items.

The children were also given the opportunity to lend a helping hand to pack the food bags.

7 August

With the Covid-19 safety measures in place, we were not able to conduct a visit to the Senior Activity Centre with the children. Therefore, we have garnered support from the parents of our Iyad children. We had 4 parent volunteers who offered to help bring the food donation bags over to Fei Yue Senior Activity Centre.

To show our token of appreciation to parents, we presented to them a certificate of participation for the project. It wss a successful event as well as a good opportunity for parents to play a part in our first SSDB project. Bravo!
