To mark the finale of our Start Small, Dream Big (SSDB) project “Green Hands, Big Hearts”, the Nursery 2 (N2) children from E-Bridge Preschool (Montreal Link) gathered with their parents and teachers for a meaningful litter-picking experience at Woodlands Waterfront Park. This special event celebrated the children’s growing understanding of recycling, sustainability, and care for the environment.
Before setting off, everyone was reminded about outdoor safety and the importance of teamwork. The children brought along their own unwanted plastic bags from home to collect litter, showing thoughtfulness in reusing materials instead of taking new ones. Using plastic tongs, the children carefully picked up litter such as plastic bottles, food wrappers, and tissue papers. They observed closely and discussed which items could be recycled and which should be thrown into the rubbish bin. Some children pointed out that plastic bottles should go into the recycling bin, while food waste and tissue papers belong in the rubbish bin.
It was heartwarming to see parents and teachers working side by side with the children, guiding them gently and modelling environmental responsibility. Together, they cleaned different parts of the park and proudly saw the difference they made. The children’s actions reflected their growing awareness that everyone plays a part in keeping our environment clean and safe.
After the litter-picking, families gathered to enjoy some light snacks. Before leaving, the children reminded one another to throw away their snack wrappers properly — a wonderful demonstration of the positive habits they had developed throughout their SSDB journey.
Back at school, the children gathered to reflect on their experience. They eagerly shared what they had done and said the Little Green Heroes Pledge together, promising to continue caring for the environment in their everyday lives. To celebrate their efforts and dedication, each child received a certificate, marking the successful completion of their Green Hands, Big Hearts journey.
This meaningful finale not only strengthened the children’s environmental awareness but also created a lasting memory of how small hands, guided by big hearts, can make a positive impact on the world around them.
