The children embarked on a meaningful learning journey in partnership with M.Y Home Shine, to explore ways of giving back to the elderly in our community. They discovered that not all seniors live as comfortably as their own grandparents—some live alone in rental flats under challenging conditions. Through the M.Y Home Shine programme, which supports destitute elderly by cleaning and refurbishing their homes, the children learned that many seniors are frail and struggle to maintain basic home hygiene.
This inspired the children to reflect on how they could contribute in their own small but impactful ways. Together, they decided to collect and donate daily necessities and useful items to bring comfort and brighten the lives of these seniors.
After working closely with M.Y Home Shine, the children finalized a list of practical donation items, including multi-purpose cleaners, medicated oil, medicated patches, body foam, and toothpaste—everyday essentials that the elderly can use. As part of our ongoing sustainability efforts, we also invited parents to donate old but clean T-shirts, which would be upcycled into reusable bags to hold the donated items.
Pamphlets were sent home to inform parents of the initiative and guide them on what to contribute. On the collection day, the children excitedly sorted through the donated items. The older class took the lead in upcycling the T-shirts: they cut off the sleeves and collars, then tied the bottom of each shirt to create sturdy, reusable bags.
With the bags ready, the children began making heartfelt cards. The older children printed heart shapes on one side and wrote personal, encouraging messages on the other. Meanwhile, the younger children enthusiastically helped pack the items into the reusable bags. Once the cards were completed, the older children placed one in each bag and continued assisting with the packing process.
Together, the children worked hand in hand—across ages and abilities—to prepare these thoughtful care packages with love, empathy, and compassion. Through this experience, they learned the importance of giving back and that even small acts of kindness can make a big difference in someone’s life.
