YMCA Bukit Batok CDC launched this year’s Start Small Dream Big project with the theme “Together for Tomorrow, Empowering Young Hearts.” The children were introduced to caring for family, friends, nature, and the environment while learning to work as one team.
On the first day, the children learned Oscar’s five essential food safety tips—buying, storing, cleaning, handling, and cooking. Parents joined in to demonstrate healthy recipes, including fruit salad, cheese sandwiches, multigrain pancakes, pesto pasta, and nutritious sandwiches. The children enjoyed the hands-on experience and tasting the treats, making it an inspiring start to our SSDB project!
Visit to the Singapore Discovery Centre
As part of caring for family and friends, the children visited the Singapore Discovery Centre to learn about the production of food—from harvesting to processing, packaging, and delivery. They also planted seeds to bring home, watering and observing their growth. Exploring a small garden further deepened their appreciation of how plants are nurtured.
Talk By Singapore Food Agency (SFA)
To promote food safety and sustainability, the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) conducted an engaging session for our Nursery 2, K1, and K2 children. Through storytelling and play, they learned key messages about food safety and food security.
Following the SFA talk, children engaged in interactive activities to learn about healthy eating, balanced meals, and local produce such as nai bai, lettuce, eggs, and pomfret. They discovered how Singapore’s farmers use creativity and technology—like AI-managed fish farms and efficient egg production—to overcome land constraints, ensuring food security. Through crafts, discussions, and the engaging story of SFA’s superhero trio—Seabastian Water, Eggs Benedette C, and Caixinderella—they gained a deeper appreciation for local farming, food safety, and the vital role farmers play in our community.
Holiday Craft Fun with SFA
K1 and K2 children enjoyed creative craft activities using materials from the Singapore Food Agency, reinforcing their knowledge of local produce and healthy eating in a fun, hands-on in June.
Caring for Family & Friends
Children from Playgroup to K2 created heartfelt crafts for Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, expressing their love and appreciation for their parents as part of the “Caring for Family” theme.
Caring for Nature and the Environment
As part of the SSDB project “Together for Tomorrow: Empowering Young Hearts”, focusing on Caring for Family & Friends and Caring for Nature and the Environment, the children took part in meaningful, hands-on experiences. For Earth Day, N2, K1, and K2 children joined a Neighbourhood Clean-Up, collecting and sorting litter to learn about caring for their environment. They also created nature-inspired Leaf Crafts using garden leaves, sparking creativity and appreciation for nature. The learning concluded with a visit to Singapore Hort Park, where they explored plants, practiced the 3Rs, and expressed their reflections through drawings—deepening their understanding of sustainability and their role in protecting the Earth.
The children learned the importance of recycling and practiced simple ways to reduce waste, including sorting materials, reusing items, and recycling at home and in school. This activity helped them develop eco-friendly habits and a sense of environmental responsibility.
The children joined Bukit View Secondary students in an interactive session using recycled materials for games like bottle bowling and stacking. The activity showed how everyday items can be repurposed, fostering creativity and environmental awareness.
As part of the SSDB project themed “Together for Tomorrow: Empowering Young Hearts”, which focuses on Caring for Family & Friends and Caring for Nature and the Environment, the children concluded their learning journey with a visit to Singapore Hort Park. There, they explored a variety of plant species and practiced the 3Rs—Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. Through keen observation, thoughtful reflection, and expressive drawings, they deepened their understanding of sustainability and strengthened their commitment to caring for the Earth, empowering them to make a positive impact for the future. Throughout this journey both the children and teachers find joy in simple acts of kindness and cultivate the love for nature.
