A Taste of My Sweet Harvest

Learning Domains: Discovery of the World & Social Emotional Development

Learning Disposition: Sense of Wonder and Curiosity

For the president challenge, Start Small Dream Big (SSDB) project that Nursery, K1 and K1 children have started since April 2022, our preschool have been carrying out a series of meaningful activities for children to cultivate the love of gardening. Our centre has been working with the community garden to grow our own vegetable. Uncle Lim, the gardener built a vertical vegetable garden using PVC pipes. K1 children sow the seeds of Cai Xin, a locally grown vegetable in June. They had been watering their vegetable dutifully in the community garden for the past months.

The time had come for the sweet harvest. Children pulled the vegetable from the soil and cut the roots. The class collected the vegetable and let our centre cook, Auntie Toh fry the vegetable.

Children tasted their very own harvest and the class teachers also encouraged them to eat more vegetable to stay healthy. Children talked about the taste and went home to share their gardening experience with their parents. In this SSDB project, children experienced growing their own food and were encouraged to eat more green. They also developed the positive learning disposition of a sense of wonder and curiosity having witnessed the life cycle of the Cai Xin vegetable. Great work, K1 children!
