SSDB 2022 Blooming Kindness: Small Act, Big Impact

Project Overview

Blooming Kindness: Small Act, Big Impact is a project tribute to the community workers. The past years have not been easy for everyone due to the pandemic. During those trying times, some people willingly dedicated themselves to serving the community through their services. Our centre, together with Singapore Kindness Movement (SKM) and our supportive parents, has decided to pay tribute to our unsung heroes. To not let their efforts go unnoticed, to let them know that they are seen and deeply appreciated.

This project aims to encourage children:

  1. To honour the community workers through giving and recognition.

  2. To spark up kindness and gratitude towards the community workers by reflecting on their roles in society.

  3. To be responsible residents by showing respect and appreciation to community workers.

Project Lau**nch Party**

 28 May 2022

Our centre is delighted to start our SSDB project this year by connecting with parents and children at the launch of our project. We acknowledged that this project would only be possible with the collaboration of the school, parents, and community.

Ready, set, hats on!

Banner Making!

They are all excited to design their own project banner. On the banner are the illustrations of community workers at work.

Kindness in Action

Donations, and appreciation bags preparation

We started to receive overflowing support from the children and parents with their in-kind donations. These donations will be repackaged in the appreciation bags sponsored by SKM and will be given to our beneficiaries.

After two weeks, our little Blooming Kindness team started to repackage and prepare the appreciation bags.

Tada! We managed to make 80 appreciation bags in total. We are all excited to distribute these to our hardworking community workers.

We have also prepared our creative and heartwarming appreciation letters to be given with the bags.

Kindness Week

19 - 25 June 2022

We excitedly celebrated kindness week, too, using the kindness day package resources from Singapore Kindness Movement. Children and parents are all ready to participate in our Kindness week challenge as they will fulfil the kindness chart by filling it with stickers. One sticker is equivalent to one act of kindness. This activity promotes acts of kindness throughout the week and even after the event.

Appreciation bags distribution

We have distributed our appreciation bags and letters to our dear community workers. Police officers, park cleaners, bakers, hawker cleaners, clinic staff, delivery men, and market sellers are a few of the ones that received appreciation bags and letters from our students. They have seen and experienced the joy of giving, and they have felt how a small act of kindness significantly impacts society. It was a one-of-a-kind experience that will embed in the hearts of our young learners.

Conclusion

This project provides us, the teachers, parents and students, the platform to reach out to our society and extend kindness no matter how young or old we are. The experience has taught my students that being kind doesn’t need to be sacrificial, and it can be finding joy in serving others, whether in great or minor ways. Being kind also has an enormous effect on our community; as my students witnessed, they feel happy when they make others happy, creating a comfortable and harmonious society. We learnt not to take for granted the small things we can do as they may have an extensive and ripple effect on us. Who knows that saying hello or holding the lift door open would make someone’s day bright? Never stop being kind and spread it.
