SSDB 2021: FOOD SAFETY

Our K2 children embarked on the Start Small Dream Big Project on 11 May 2021 in collaboration with Singapore Food Agency. Our children were enthusiastic to learn about food safety and food safety practices.

The children are busy preparing decorations for SSDB launch party.

We are decorating the words “START SMALL DREAM BIG” in groups of two and three.

“KICK-START” SSDB 2021!

What is Food Safety?

What will happen to us if we eat contaminated food?

INTRODUCTION OF FOOD SAFETY WITH FOOD SAFETY TIPS

The children learned about 5 Key Tips on Food Safety.

  • Tip #1 Select the Food You Buy Carefully

  • Tip #2 Wash and Keep Clean

  • Tip #3 Separate Raw Food from Cooked Food

  • Tip #4 Cook Your Food Well

  • Tip #5 Keep Your Food at Safe Temperature

“We should not buy badly bruised or mouldy fruits”.

“We should wash our fruits and vegetables before eating”.

“We should be mindful that juices from raw food can contaminate the cooked food”.

We are learning to check the expiry date of food items such as packaged tea, bread and canned foods.

“We are packing ready-to-eat foods and foods that need to be cooked separately”.

“Do not buy expired products!”

“I am checking the expiration date”.

The aim of Singapore Food Agency is to raise awareness on food security issues and to work towards rallying support for local produce.

Our children “Start Small” by growing their own “edibles”. Together with their teachers and school attendant, Aunty Yin, they decided to grow bean sprouts for their own consumption!

Beans were soaked in water for 6 hours before use. After which, water was drained away.

Bean sprouts after 3 days.

GROWING OUR OWN BEAN SPROUTS

  1. Children preparing soaked beans in plastic container.

  2. Covering the beans with a paper towel.

  3. Spraying water on bean sprouts.

After a few days, we observe our beans. We  were excited and happy to see our bean sprouts growing well.

No outdoor space? No green thumb? No problem!

“We can still grow our own bean sprouts!”

“Bravo!”

With our parent’s support, we brought our bean sprouts home and cooked them with fried noodles or added them into soups.

“So nutritious and yummy”.

“Removing the roots!”

“Into the soup it goes!”

“So delectable!”
