Appreciating NSMen

In appreciation of NSMen and in line with the SSDB theme “Caring for Our Community,” the Nursery to K2 children took part in a meaningful sharing session on 10th July 2025. This special event aimed to help the young learners understand the significance of National Service and recognize the contributions of those who have served to protect Singapore.

The session began with a warm introduction by their teacher, who explained in simple terms what National Service means and why it is important for the safety and well-being of the nation. This set the stage for the highlight of the day — a talk by Mr. Soh, a former National Serviceman and proud father in the school community.

Mr. Soh shared engaging stories from his time in service, describing the six different services under National Service and how each plays a crucial role in safeguarding the nation. Through his heartfelt sharing, the children learned about the duties and responsibilities of servicemen, as well as what life was like in the army camp. He spoke about the discipline, teamwork, and resilience required to serve, and highlighted the values of courage and commitment that extend beyond military life.

Although Mr. Soh is no longer in active service, he expressed that his dedication to the nation remains unwavering, and that he would readily serve again if called upon. His sincerity and passion left a deep impression on both the children and teachers.

The children listened attentively and participated actively, asking curious and thoughtful questions such as, “Was it scary during training?” and “What food did you eat in the camp?” Their genuine interest reflected their growing understanding and appreciation for the sacrifices made by NSMen.

The session concluded with a heartfelt and memorable moment. Mr. Soh’s daughter, beaming with pride, stepped forward to present him with a handmade card she had lovingly crafted. The card was decorated with drawings, kind words, and messages of gratitude. The gesture moved not only Mr. Soh but also everyone present, serving as a touching reminder of the love, pride, and respect that families and communities hold for those who serve the nation.

This experience not only deepened the children’s knowledge about National Service but also inspired them to show appreciation and care for the people who help keep Singapore safe. It was a meaningful and memorable day that truly embodied the spirit of “Caring for Our Community.”
