Star Learners @ Woodlands: Working Hand in Hand with our Community and Family (2)

For Star Learners @ Woodlands, we focused on working hand in hand with our community and family. By doing so, we would want to inculcate the values of care, humility, kindness and compassion in children. This project encouraged our children to give back to our community and to strengthen the family bonds.

We collaborated with our parents and children for this project. Some of the take-home activities provided were to colour the animal colouring sheet and cut to make puppets, visit the supermarket to find one type of local produce, take a walk in the garden or park, bring a pail to collect rainwater, visit neighbourhood library and to contribute food and drink items for the care packs. We also involved the Playgroup and Nursery 1 children in bringing the items for the care pack preparation. The Nursery 2, Kindergarten 1 and Kindergarten 2 children were involved in packing the care packs.

  • Parents contributed empty bottles/containers for children to collect rainwater in school. With the rainwater collected, children used it to water our school plants.
  • Children took a walk to a park/garden to see and spot an interesting animal/plant.
  • Children visited the supermarket to find one type of local produce such as mushroom and vegetable.
  • Children attempted to colour and cut the colouring sheets to make puppets.
  • Children visited the library to read and borrow some titles recommended to them.

In school, teachers conducted activities such as planting mung beans, using empty toilet roll to bend into shapes and do stamping, using containers to collect rainwater and use it to water our school plants and reading stories etc.

Overall, it was a successful project and children gained valuable experiences and character traits from it. As a school, we worked with colleagues, children, parents and community to be able to give back to our community, enhance home-school partnership and strengthen family relationships.
