SSDB: “Treasuring Family and Friends” Project

As part of our SSDB project, “Treasuring Family and Friends,” the children discussed about loving others and what it meant. They explained the different ways their family members love them such as hugging them or gifting them toys. Additionally, they were able to explain how their peers love them such as playing with them or caring for them when they were hurt.

The children were introduced to a story about “Happy Birthday Dawn” and the 5 love languages (words of affirmation, quality time, physical touch, receiving gifts and acts of services). Activities revolving around the 5 love languages were conducted for the children throughout the project.

The children created ‘playdough’ gifts for their parents. They were also encouraged to make cards for their peers or family members in the “Let’s Read” or “Let’s Create” learning centre. Moreover, the teacher would intentionally emphasise on the value, “care” between the children during lesson involving pair or teamwork.

Events at school were also opportunities for children to strengthen their friendship. During our friendship week, children watched videos and read books pertaining to friendship. They also created “friendship soup” with their classmates. Moreover, children made cards for their peers at home with the help of their parents!

Racial Harmony Day helped the children to learn to love and appreciate the differences between one and another and National Day brought us together as ‘one people, one nation.’

Overall, the “Treasuring Family and Friends” project helped children in developing the understanding that “To love is to give” and the way you give love to others varies. We are also thankful for our wonderful parents and caregivers who worked together with us!
