SSDB - ‘Spinkling Kindness Everywhere’

For this year’s Start Small Dream Big project, our Nursery 2 children focused on Kindness. Through this project, we aim for our children to understand the importance of being kind. Moreover, we also want them to demonstrate kindness in their daily lives through actions and words. To get children started, we brainstormed about ‘What is Kindness’, ‘Why is Kindness important’ and ‘How can Kindness be displayed’.

Next, we read a story named ‘The Smartest Giant in Town’ by Axel Scheffler and Julia Donaldson. Children were able to identify the many acts of Kindness the giant did to help the animals in need. Children were also brought to attention that Kindness is not only about helping others but also being grateful, thankful and appreciative.

In the next activity, children made their own ‘I am Kind’ hat. Children were given a set of Kindness cards in which they got to choose a card and display the kind action in class. With their hats on, children were motivated and excited in demonstrating Kindness to the people around them.

Children also decorated a ‘Kindness card’ to give anyone around them. With some guidance of the teachers, they also added little messages on to card such as ‘You are beautiful’, ‘Keep Smiling’, to brighten up the day of others.

To get children to keep up with what they have learnt in school, children brought home a Kindness Checklist. The checklist included some acts of Kindness that children could demonstrate in their daily lives and routines. For every act of Kindness that children displayed, parents were to put a sticker on the checklist. This was to encourage children to be continuously engaged in acts of Kindness even at home. After 2 weeks, children brought back their Kindness checklist to school. They shared about how often they took part in acts of Kindness at home.

Lastly, to sum it all up, we had a reflective session with the children. Children shared that being Kind is very easy. Together, we agreed that Kindness should and must be a part of our daily lives, everday and everytime. With that we would like to conclude that ‘Kindness is free, Sprinkle it everywhere’.
