Love in Action 分享爱,传递爱

In St James Church Kindergarten (Leedon), our Starlight 2 and Starlight 4 children embarked on a project to learn more about helping others and sharing love. As recipients of God’s love, we want to share love in our capacity. We want to use our talents to help others.

Uncle Calvin from SPD came to school and shared with us more about supporting people with disabilities. We learnt that we can start from simple things such as saying “hello” to them, being their friend and asking if they need help. We also found out that a wheelchair can be costly and therapy can be expensive for the people in need.

Together, we decided to craft, bake and plant to raise funds for SPD. As a class of 6-year-olds, we put our little hands to work! Over the course of 2 months, we put in our best effort to come up with different merchandise to raise funds!

We had a total of 8 products and each was tedious to make. The aquabeads craft, beads craft and keychain took us a lot of time. Soap-making was a new experience for most of us and we especially loved customising the scent of the soap. Repotting and decorating a pot of succulents was fun too. We put in a lot of care to make sure the plants grew well before we sold them.

We made cookies! We learnt this skill from 2 mummies who came to share their recipes with us. We recorded the ingredient list and gave them out together with the recipe to our cookie buyers. We also decorated postcards and aprons for sale. It was a difficult lesson for us to accommodate the idea of giving away what we made and not keeping it for ourselves. In the process, we continued to encourage and remind each other of the organisation we were helping- SPD.

Finally, with all the preparations completed, we started the sales of our merchandise. Orders started to come in. We packed and delivered each of them. On 19 August 2022, we held a Jumbo Sale that was open to all parents, including those from other classes, in order to raise more funds.

We are immensely grateful for all the support and love we received in our journey. We are both happy and proud to share that we exceeded our target of raising $1500. We may be young, but we can still bless others in our little ways. Since the start of our project, we learnt about the idea of inclusiveness and not leaving anyone behind. Cheers to an even more loving and caring Singapore! May our story encourage you to share love with everyone around you!

With love,
