On 13 June 2025, our Nursery 2 to Kindergarten 2 students from Artemis Preskool embarked on a meaningful journey to Kok Fah Farm Technology. This farm excursion was part of our ongoing Start Small Dream Big (SSDB)initiative to inspire children to connect with nature, understand sustainable living, and appreciate the origins of the food they eat. With smiles on their faces and curiosity in their eyes, our young explorers spent the day learning through play, hands-on experiences, and guided discovery.
💧 Hands-On with Hydroponics
One of the most exciting parts of the trip was trying out hydroponics planting. The children were introduced to the idea of growing vegetables without soil—using only water and nutrients. With guided support, they carefully placed seedlings into the hydroponic setup and learned how this method helps save space and water. Many were surprised that leafy greens could grow “just in water!” This activity deepened their understanding of modern farming techniques and sparked interest in how we can grow food in city spaces.
🌸 A Journey Through the Senses
Children also engaged in sensory exploration by seeing, smelling, and touching various aromatic herbs. As they strolled through the herb garden, they encountered plants like lavender, mint, and oregano. Some wrinkled their noses, some smiled in delight—but all were curious and eager to explore more. This hands-on activity encouraged children to slow down, observe closely, and experience nature using all five senses.
🌵 Aloe Vera Wonders
One highlight was the aloe vera demonstration. A friendly uncle from the farm showed the children how to harvest the plant. With fascinated eyes, they watched as he carefully sliced open the thick leaves and scooped out the transparent gel. He invited the children to wash their hands using the aloe, and many giggled as they rubbed the cool, soothing gel between their fingers. It was a fun and meaningful way to show how plants can help us in everyday life.
🌱 Planting Their Own Microgreens
Each child also took part in microgreen planting—a simple yet impactful activity where they planted their own tiny greens in small pots. They learned the steps of preparing the soil, gently placing the seeds, and watering them just right. Best of all, the children brought home their very own microgreen pots! This hands-on experience nurtured responsibility, care, and excitement about watching something they planted grow day by day.
🥒Farm Walk and Vegetable Discovery
Beyond the workshops, the children were taken on a tour of the wider farm. They saw greenhouses filled with healthy crops and observed vegetables like cucumbers, long beans, lettuce, and other leafy greens growing in different environments. Teachers encouraged children to point out differences in shapes and colors, and some eagerly identified the vegetables they had seen before in the kitchen or during mealtimes. This open-ended exploration allowed them to make real-world connections to what they eat and how it’s grown.
🌞 A Day to Remember
The Kok Fah Farm excursion was more than just a trip—it was a day filled with laughter, learning, and connection to the natural world. At Artemis Preskool, we believe in providing meaningful learning opportunities that let children see, touch, and experience life beyond the classroom. This adventure offered rich learning moments that planted seeds of curiosity, care for the environment, and a deeper appreciation for nature’s gifts.
As we continue our SSDB journey, this memorable farm visit reminds us that even the smallest hands can dream big and grow a better tomorrow.
