As part of our SSDB journey, the K1 children explored the theme of Recycling to deepen their awareness of caring for the environment. The project began when a child noticed an uncle crushing cans during our outdoor walk and asked, “What is the uncle doing?” On the same day, the children also observed rubbish such as plastic bags and ice cream cups in the river, sparking curiosity about why some people dispose of waste irresponsibly instead of using bins.
These observations led to meaningful discussions on the importance of using bins appropriately and how recycling helps protect our Earth. To extend their learning, the children took part in hands-on activities such as sorting trash and recyclable items, visiting the neighbourhood recycling bin, and creating their own recycling bin for the classroom. Families were also involved, with children bringing in recycled materials from home for in-class and take-home projects.
The children’s learning was further enriched through a visit to the Sustainable Singapore Gallery. There, they explored digital planting, discovered how trees and plants support animals and birds, and created carriers using recycled materials. These experiences nurtured their environmental awareness and reinforced the message that small actions, like recycling and caring for nature, can make a big difference in protecting our planet.
