Composting: E-Bridge Pre-School @ Bukit Batok West

Another year, another purposeful project! E-Bridge Pre-School @ Bukit Batok West had a meaningful time working on the ‘Composting’ project for our Start Small Dream Big (SSDB) this year. The K1 and K2 levels were chosen for this project as they were interested in learning on how the compost works.

As part of the introduction, K1B class teacher introduced the topic through short video clips (YouTube Links: https://youtu.be/MQN26JLs7xU; https://youtu.be/Q5s4n9r-JGU) on what ‘compost’ is to allow children an idea how it looks like. Then from the videos, we brainstormed more ideas on our understanding of what a ‘compost’ is about!

As part of the process, the children were invited to dig up soil during the outdoor learning session using gardening tools. They truly enjoyed helping out to look for earthworms, and transfer rich and soft soil into smaller containers to bring back into the classroom for further observations.

In addition, parents were invited to participate in regards to contributing food scraps such as eggshells (rinsed), vegetable and fruit peels, bread sides, and/or used tea bags in the month of May onwards.

Once the containers were filled up, the children then transferred the contents into the big compost bin that we had for the school.

When the food scraps have broken down and decompose further, we would invite children to scoop and pour the decomposed soil to act as fertilizers for our growing plants in the school garden.
