In our centre’s participation for this year SSDB project, we decided to focus on the values of -> kindness and empathy, particularly, towards the elderly. And for the first time ever, our centre collaborated with St Luke’s Eldercare Active Ageing Centre @ Nee Soon Centre to allow children to have the opportunity to engage and bond with the elderly through simple physical activities.
The K1 and K2 classes planned simple activities such as - Throwing Bean Bags onto Trays, Tossing of Crushed Newspaper Balls, Rolling Ping Pong Balls into Cups and Paper Cup Ball Catcher. Children were involved in the preparation of materials such as painting the paper cups. Children also practiced singing and dancing to “You Are My Sunshine” as a short performance for the elderly. To add on, children also prepared some art crafts as a token to the elderly.
During the project execution, children demonstrated not just enjoyment and excitement but also kindness and care as they talk, interact and bond with the elderly who were present at the eldercare. The elderly also thoroughly enjoyed the presence of the children and interacted with them throughout the activities.
The project execution ended with a cert-giving from our centre principal, Ms Nurul, to the eldercare’s supervisor, Ms Li May. Ms Li May also extended her thanks and appreciation to children and staff for taking time to spend the morning with the elderly.
This collaboration with St Luke’s Eldercare @ Nee Soon Central is one of the centre’s pivotal moments in children’s holistic learning and growth as they build the sense of responsibility to be careful, caring, and kind with the elderly at the eldercare.
