One day, the N2 children came across a turtle lying still on the grass. Curious and concerned, we brought this encounter back into the classroom for discussion. The children reflected thoughtfully on what might have happened to the turtle and shared their ideas on how we can show care for sea creatures.
They explored possible reasons why the turtle was out of the water. Ayra suggested, “People carry the turtle out of the water,” while Khayrah added, “The weather is getting hotter, so the turtle comes out of the water.” This led to a meaningful conversation about how human actions and environmental changes can affect marine life.
We then asked the question: “How can we protect sea creatures?”
The children responded with thoughtful suggestions:
Callan: “Be kind to them.”
Alif: “Don’t disturb them.”
Olive: “Don’t put dirty things in the water.”
Hikari: “Don’t throw rubbish.”
To build on this discussion, the children engaged in creative activities such as craftwork that highlighted the importance of keeping the sea safe and clean for marine animals. As an extension, a home-based parent-child project was introduced where families worked together to design dioramas of healthy ocean environments. These were later shared during a Show & Tell session, giving the children the chance to showcase their creativity and express their learning with peers.
Through this experience, the children developed empathy, a deeper sense of environmental awareness, and strengthened the core values of Responsibility and Respect for living creatures and the world around them.
