Caring for our environment

SDM-Tinkerland advocates the need to teach our young ones the importance of caring for our environment. Thus, we have included this virtue in

our curriculum every year.

This year, in order to further reinforce the virtue of caring for our environment and the importance of the 3Rs, we have invited The Earth Avengers and SembEnviro to our school.

The Earth Avengers taught our kids that plastics that are recyclable can be made into different items like furniture, flower pots, traffic cones, packaging, bags, trash bags, etc. The children also had hands on experience in creating small items from recycled plastics using a Renegade 3D pen. They even managed to use this device to create their names!

SembEnviro not only focused on the importance of the 3Rs; especially on plastics but also on how to identify plastics that are recyclable. The children learnt to identify the recyclable plastics by looking at the Resin Identification Codes. They were able to identify that types 1, 2, 4 and 5 are the types of plastics that can be recycled.

At the end of both sessions, the children were able to share that they will do their utmost to play their part in caring for our environment by being more conscious about what they discard daily. Some shared that they can recycle plastic bottles to make pencil holders/pots for plants/coin banks/game like nine pins or even for water play. Some kids even shared that recycling plastics not only help them to care for our environment but also help them in saving money for better use.

One of the most important point shared was that they want to lend a hand in saving our Earth. They want to start the 3Rs rolling in school as an example to their younger peers and also at home because majority of the time, plastic materials are often discarded into trash bins without a thought. They were eager to assume the roles of Little Earth Avengers so that Earth will be a habitable planet for many years to come.
