3R's: Recycle, Reduce, Reuse

In the month of April 2017, we launched our SSDB project with the parents. Before we launch the project with the parents, the children were exposed to activities as to why it is necessary to do the project. Children were guided daily to our theme “Saving GAIA through Reuse, Reduce and Recycle”

We sent out memos to all the parents even to those that were unable to attend the launch, they would still be in the loop of what the project is all about.

Even after the launch, parents came in and dropped items into our 3R’s boxes. All parents are very enthusiastic about our project even those who didn’t managed to attend the launch, as they were given the write-up of what the project was all about.

Besides having this theme in the centre, the older children were brought out for an excursion to the beach for “Beach Clean-Up”. Before the excursion, the children were shown video of how a dirty sea or ocean will impact not only the marine lives but our lives too.

We collected more than 10 bags of rubbish for an hour’s clean-up. Yes 10 bags!!! We found slippers, styrofoam, light bulb (😱light bulb) among some of the items we collected.

Once we were back to school, the children were inspired, aware, willing and enthusiastic to help save GAIA. We did lots of exquisite and stunning craft works using the recycle materials that the parents had donated to the centre.

With the making of all these crafts, the Teachers and the children had a lively and animated discussion and decided to have a Charity Bazaar to showcase and sell their imaginative and artistic handicrafts. They decided on how much the craftwork should be sold to the parents.

So on 16/06/2017, the school held a Parents-Teachers Meet Up Cum President’s Charity Bazaar.

The response from the parents were positive, overwhelming and supportive. The children were keen and excited to convey to their parents as to why they did the Charity Bazaar. The turned up were unexpectedly high.

In the end, we managed to collect more than $150 for the Charity Bazaar as each items were sold @$2.00.

We, the Teachers of Appleland Montessori were very grateful to the parents for their tremendous support to our SSDB event.
