SSDB 2022: Recycling

K1 Children are learning about ‘Plants around us’. Children started developing a sense of wonder and curiosity about plants as they found out more about the parts of the plant, what is needed for plant growth and how useful plants can be. As they moved on, they became more aware of the importance of plants and how growing a plant requires perseverance and determination. As part of the lesson, children got the opportunity to grow their own plant and learn about the different stages of plant growth.

As our SSDB 2022 project is about recycling, teachers conscientiously made use of recycled materials for learning resources. In the recent activity where children were required to plant a seed, children used their Fruity Friday snack cup as their “flower pot” to plant the seed. This allowed children to understand the importance of repurposing waste - using ‘trash’ as a substitute of the required object (flower pot) as it fits the same purpose (a plastic container that is able to hold the growth of a plant). As teachers, it is important that we model these recycling practices at school and teach children to reuse items, helping to reinforce their ecological values and commitment to the environment.
