Making mosquito trap

12 July

The discovery of the Gravitrap from NEA amazed us. We wanted to make something similar to catch mosquito too! As such, a discussion topic “What does mosquito like?” was raised, and we shared our thoughts.

A discussion topic was raised and children shared their thoughts.

“Plant, because they like plant juice. I thibk cactus because it is juicy!”

“Apple because mosquito like fruits”

“Watermelon because it is very juicy.”

“Water, to lay eggs.”

After which, we worked in groups and used secondary resources such as Google to help us confirm our queries. Based on what we have searched, we discovered that mosquito are attracted to warm body, all kinds of flowers, sweat, perfume, carbon dioxide and plant juice.

With the information gathered, we discussed the elements we could use for our mosquito traps.

Children working together to brainstorm what they wanted to put in their mosquito trap in order to attract mosquito.

Children document their ideas for their mosquito traps.

With the plan in mind, we set out to create our mosquito traps. We have the group that sprayed perfume with floral scent in the mosquito trap, the group that placed flowers in it, and the group that filled some water in it. We also pasted sticky tape on the interior hoping mosquito get trap and can’t fly out.

Tada! After some time, our mosquito traps are done!

We then placed them in different corners of the classroom.

We shall see if mosquito get tricked into our mosquito traps in a few days time!

Stay tune to find out!
