Discussing about dengue

During daily conversations with their peers, the children were observed to be asking questions about posters around the neighbourhood. Some questions the children were asking included ‘why are they many coloured circle?’ and ‘some have green circle on the poster, some have yellow and I have also seen red!’

The Teachers then used this questions as a topic to discuss in class. The children were first introduced to the meaning of ‘dengue’. After understanding that dengue is a type of virus spread by mosquitoes, the children then learnt about the cause of it. Teachers conducted picture talk to help children understand how mosquitoes spread the virus and the children learnt that mosquitoes breed in stagnant, standing fresh water oftentimes found around the home. After learning about the  about the five-step mozzie wipeout, the children went back home to share with their parents and also checked for stagnant water around their homes so they can help to pour away water and help keep everyone safe at home!

The children also reflected on actions the school in implementing to reduce the number of mosquito bites on everyone and wrote thier responses. Some of the children’s responses included wearing of mosquito patch and spraying in the mosquito repellent.
