Week 1: ‘Nature and Me!’ – Launch of SSDB 2020 Project

Our K2 children were very excited to embark on this year’s SSDB project titled Nature and Me! The Covid-19 pandemic and the Circuit Breaker period did not dampen their spirit in gearing up for the launch!

Tying up with this year’s SSDB theme, ‘A Caring and Inclusive Home for All’, we decided to kick start on a gardening project because it is something that all children can do – despite coming from all walks of life. Gardening is also an activity that allows all children of different abilities to be included and to be engaged in.

The launch was held on Friday, 17 July 2020. Our K2 children came dressed as little gardeners for the occasion! Lucky for us, the community garden was just outside our classroom! With the social distancing measures in mind, our little gardeners were split into 2 teams. We started things off with a physical workout to loosen the muscles & set the energy right — because gardening is a lot of work too!

The first group headed out to the garden to witness the ribbon-cutting ceremony and to pick up simple gardening tips from the community gardener, Atok Naim. We were glad that he could make time for us and be part of the launch! With his guidance, the little gardeners took turns to plant kangkong seeds and green beans seeds into the pots. These plants would be left in the garden for the little gardeners to care for.

Meanwhile, the second group stayed indoors to watch documentaries, info-educational videos about gardening, parts of the plants and how do plants grow.

The groups switched places so that all of the little gardeners got equal opportunities!

Finally it was time to move on to the 2nd part of the launch – planting their very own green bean plants from scratch! Our little gardeners did everything on their own – from putting leaves as the base, pouring soil and fertiliser into the pot, planting green bean seeds into the soil and to watering the plant! They were very excited to bring their plant back home as they will be caring for it with their family. At the same time, our little gardeners were given an observation booklet for them to jot down their findings as they watch their plants grow, both at home and in the garden.

To wrap up the launch party, our little gardeners enjoyed a bowl of yummy green bean soup prepared lovingly by our chef!

Next week, our little gardeners will be discovering more about the essentials of water in gardening and will be engaged in an interesting activity which involves water!
