SSDB 2021 - With You In Mind (Part 1)

“Alone, we can do so little; Together, we can do so much more.” - Helen Keller

Our focus for this year’s Start Small Dream Big (SSDB) project was placed on the community helpers, in particular the cleaners within our vicinity.

Keeping in mind that the COVID-19 situation is still ongoing at the moment, these community cleaners worked tirelessly to make sure that our neighbourhoods remain clean and uncluttered. Despite the current pandemic, these cleaners put themselves forward to ensure that people in our neighbourhood get to live in a comfortable space we all call home.

Thus, our children from the K1 and K2 classes have come together to participate in this project to show their heartfelt appreciation towards these community helpers’ efforts.

Working hand in hand with our neighbourhood’s Town Council, our children will made use of their creative juices to come up with designs to be drawn and painted onto tote bags. The tote bags were then gifted to the community cleaners as a token of appreciation!

Our children after receiving the blank tote bags and all ready to start on our project. How exciting!

Here, we have our K1 children using acrylic paint colours, they painted it onto the plain tote bags. They utilised various art techniques to create different designs - painting within the lines to create geometrical patterns, using the back of the marker to dab paint and fill up the heart templates.

Next, our K2 children have decided to create their unique tote bag designs by making use of other art techniques, e.g. using their hand prints to print on flower patterns, or even using recycled materials like unused glue stick caps to do printings within the butterfly template.

Our aim is to come up with multiple designs consisting of bright colour ranges, so that it will bring smiles to the faces of our community cleaners!

For the finishing touches, both our K1 and K2 children wrote a ‘Thank You’ tag each to express their heartfelt thanks to all the community cleaners. These tags will be hung on each of the completed tote bags before gifting it to the cleaners. The messages came from the children themselves, for example “Thank you for cleaning our void deck.”, “Thank you for keeping our neighbourhood clean!” and many more.

In our next post (Part 2), we will be sharing some pictures of our K1/K2 children presenting their beautifully designed tote bags over to one of our community cleaners!
