SSDB 2020 Finale - Spread Love, Not Germs

As part of our SSDB finale, the children made 50 bottles of hand sanitisers to raise funds for Children’s Cancer Foundation. The children had discussed and decided to make the solution alcohol-free such that it will not be too strong. The children were given the opportunity to read and follow simple instructions in the recipe, estimate and read the measurement on the measuring jug. These activities enhanced their fine motor skills and eye hand coordination as they poured the solution into the small bottles using a funnel. The children added a personal touch to the packaging with specially designed handwritten ‘Thank You’ tags and sticker labels pasted on the bottles.

Due to current COVID-19 situation and to avoid inter-mingle among classes, the sale of hand sanitisers was held within the classroom. To acquire a wider reach of customers, children recorded videos of themselves promoting the hand sanitisers and launched the sale online in our Parent Engagement Portal to parents and children of other classes as well.

The children were given the opportunity to enhance their language skills as they explored different ways of communication. They discovered how the choice of words, body language and verbal tone plays a vital role in conveying a message across in a marketing video as compared to a daily conversation. This experience had boosted the children’s self-confidence and courage speaking in front of the camera.

Knowing the situation, the children took up the challenge and played dual roles as both the buyer and seller for the sale of hand sanitisers in class. They took turns to be the customer to purchase the hand sanitisers and the next day they played another role as the cashier to count the money received and record the orders in a recording sheet. The children were given the opportunity to practice their social skills through communicating with one another while undertaking the different roles. At the end of the whole event, the children collated and recorded the sales of the hand sanitisers from the whole centre. The proceeds raised will be donated to Children’s Cancer Foundation.

With the job well done, the children reflected and documented their thoughts through drawings and writings. It has been a meaningful learning journey giving back to the community despite the on-going pandemic. Nothing is impossible when we put our hearts and efforts into it. Kudos to the children for overcoming all the challenges through working together as a team, supporting and encouraging one another to persevere on tasks to play their part for the less fortunate with the conviction that ‘No one can do everything, but everyone can do something!’
