Seeing Green. Going Green. Doing Green.

In this year’s Start Small Dream Big project, PCF Sparkletots @ Marsiling (LCC) involved the Nursery 2 to Kindergarten 2 children to participate in the project. As PCF curriculum supports sustainability practices and encourages recycling and upcyclying, we have instilled in the children, from their preschool years, good environmentally habits and practices.

Our project title this year is ‘Seeing Green. Going Green. Doing Green’. Our principal, teachers, and children were united during the centre’s SSDB launch party which was held on Thursday, 29th April 2021. Teachers introduced this year’s project and the children learnt the importance of caring for the environment.

Prior to the launched party, the K2 children and their parents did a mini project as part of the centre Term 1 theme on ‘Houses’ using everyday materials, such as newspaper, boxes, carton, etc… They created their own 3D-model of their ‘Buildings’ or ‘Dream Houses’. The children took pride in their creations. With the provided opportunity and experience, the children were excited and to think creatively about how they can make use of recycle materials to make craft activities in the coming weeks.

On Wednesday, 16th June 2021, the K1/K2 children had a virtual learning journey titled ‘Green Learning Journey @ Bukit Panjang CC’ in partnership with Northwest CDC by Singapore Environmental Council. They shared with the children on ways to adopt a green mindset and to inculcate in them to show care and concern for the environment.

In the month of August, in conjunction with our 56th National Day celebration week, as a class effort, the children participated in a contest creating Singapore iconic place’s structure out of the upcycled materials such as plastic water bottles, egg trays, straws, bottle caps, and many more that they donated themselves.

Prior to the celebration, in the month of July and early August 2021, our centre secured some basic materials from Kindred Studio SG (Preschool Market) Recyclables Hub like empty boxes to start our recyclable collection. We also get parents and children to collect and donate old and recycled materials such as wrapping papers, kitchen rolls, cartons, and many more to make something beautiful and useful out of it. With the Covid -19 situation, we were also extra vigilant in the receiving of contributed recyclable items.

To conclude our Start Small Dream Big initiative for 2021, the teachers and children proudly showcased their creativity, inventiveness and imagination in crafting their own Singapore iconic place’s structures. Parents were assigned the role of ‘Judges’ and to vote for their favourite structures. With parental involvement underway, a total of 120 votes were cast to select the top three winners.

Through this SSDB project, we definitely have inculcated in the children to show care and concern for the environment.

Well done children!
