Our Singapore Icons with Recyclables

Caring for the Environment’ was the topic that was chosen for My First Skool @ Blk 637 Pasir Ris Dr 1’s SSDB project this year. We aim to instil a sense of responsibility to the environment in our children and provide opportunities for them to play their parts in taking care of the planet we live in. The children were driven to work for this cause after their exposure to the book ‘Uncle Tang’s Cabbages’ which gave us this quote, “If you take care of the Earth, the Earth will take care of you.”

As such, one of the projects that were carried out was ‘Our Singapore Icons’, which was planned in conjunction with our National Day celebration. The children were tasked to create a 3D model of their favourite icons of Singapore using recyclables over the weekends with their parents. Prior to the project, we encouraged families to keep recyclable items as part of the project preparation.

We were truly amazed by the models created by the children and their families. Various icons of Singapore such as Marina Bay Sands, Singapore Zoo, Changi Airport, Singapore Flyer as well as defence vehicles like the army tank and jet planes were identified. We put their creations on display as part of our Centre’s Gallery Walk on the eve of National Day. The children also had the chance to share about the process of creating their models as well through a short Show-and-Tell session.

We are looking into making this project into a centre event in the near future, whereby a similar project could be done with the parents’ participation during operating hours in the Centre. This way, parents, teachers and children would be able to share feelings and ideas on the importance of recycling and what we can do with recyclables.

With love,

K1 of MFS PRS
