Mid Autumn Reunion With Seniors from MindCARE Senior Activity Centre to promote continuity of inter-generational bonding!

As part of our September Holiday programme and SSDB project 2018, the children from K2 had a reunion with the seniors of MindCARE Senior Activity Centre (MSAC) to commemorate Mid-Autumn Festival. This intergenerational bonding event was purposefully planned to continually promote and empower the children to reach out to isolated elderly and create an impact in the community!

Mid-Autumn Festival is one of the most important traditional Chinese festivals which falls on the 15th day of the eighth lunar month, around the time of the autumn equinox. The full bright moon on that night tends to inspire people’s anticipation for a family reunion; hence it is also called “Festival of Reunion”. What could be a better way for children to celebrate a meaningful Mid-Autumn festival than to reunite with the seniors and celebrate the valuable friendships forged during June Holidays! We had a spectacular line-up of activities organised for the seniors!

Bonding through Art – Lantern Making 制作灯笼. Children and seniors co-created lanterns made out recycled plastic materials. They worked together to decorate the lanterns. While the seniors enjoyed beading of colourful beads on strings to create the designs, the juniors were busy doodling with markers and pasting stickers to decorate the lanterns. Creativity at its best!

Bonding through Games – ‘Fastest Fingers First!’ – Pomelo Peeling Competition 剥柚子比赛. A test of agility, communication skills as well as teamwork among the seniors and children. And yes, the seniors and the children displayed great competitive spirit!

Mooncake Tasting Session cum Photo-taking Session 吃月饼. The children respectfully served the seniors the mooncakes and pomelos which was generously sponsored by our parents! Not forgetting the parent volunteers who helped to portion the mooncakes too!

Bonding through Learning – Riddles about Mid-Autumn Festival 猜灯谜. Mind-boggling riddles and a game of charades kept the seniors and children engaged. The intelligences and wits of the children as well as seniors were indeed commendable!

Performance by children 表演“嫦娥奔月”的故事. A heart warming performance by the children from K2 to entertain the seniors while they enjoyed feasting on the delicious mooncakes and juicy pomelos!

Farewell 告别 What a twist to the plot! It was a heart warming experience watching the seniors present the children with lanterns that they had co-created as a keepsake! The seniors mentioned that the last time they brought back the terrariums so this time the children should bring back the lanterns to play! How sweet was that! Before the children exited the door, the seniors handed the children goodies and asked the children when will they be coming back next! And what’s next? Our group photo!

Well done K2 children, all of you have indeed created such an impact in the hearts of the seniors!
