Intergenerational project: let's build a garden 🌿🌸🌹

My First Skool at 785E Woodlands, Start Small Dream Big project circles around the theme of appreciating the elderly around us through gardening activities. We tapped on their knowledge and expertise to build our garden with love and care. In this project we have collaborated with a few community bodies such as Nparks, Silver Cove and Sembawang Town Council. Initially, we would like to invite the elderly over for our gardening sessions, however due to Covid-19 measures and restrictions, we were unable to involve them in such manner. Nevertheless, we found ways to connect with them virtually. Come with me as we take you to our learning journey.

During the circuit breaker period, one of our take home kit for the children were to care for the plants with their family members. Some children were privileged to have their grandparents staying with them to care for their little seedlings.

The children returned to school after the end of circuit breaker period. We took this opportunity to have our opening ceremony! The children brought back the planters and shifted it to a bigger space for it to grow. We realised that our mini garden has grew, thus we moved them to a bigger space in front of our school.

Our grandparents played an important role to care for the plants. Some of their contributions will be, watering the plants, contributing seeds, soil, and pulling the weed.

Harvesting- The children were excited to harvest their plantations. Some of the edible plants that we shared with the grandparents to consume at home were, rosella, bitter gourd, lady’s finger, cili, Cai Xin, spinach, brinjal, groundnuts, basil and much more! It was sufficient to distribute to the grandparents of our centre. The children and grandparents were happy to be able to see their fruit of labour!
